In many cases, rib flaring is an unrecognized bony structural pathology involving deformation of the ribs and/or rib joints and cannot be treated by exercise.
Because of this, it must be addressed as a medical case – yet the medical profession often does not examine this condition closely enough. Rib flaring has no standardized medical treatment.
Rib flaring clearly consists of multiple distinct forms, yet is described in a coarse and undifferentiated manner in medical practice, with no precise clinical classification currently in place.
Against this background, I propose an initial clinical differentiation by defining a specific rib flaring subtype, referred to here as the Left rib 8/9 flare due to rib curvature deficit, as a distinct bony deformation pattern representing a first step toward a more meaningful classification.
New MRI and DICOM-based 3D imaging, combined with careful structural assessment, can open new diagnostic pathways, enable meaningful classification, and potentially support surgical approaches capable of helping tens of thousands of affected adults.
